Short answer: Crystals are expensive when they are rare, large, clear, deeply coloured and untreated. Every piece is mined, sorted, cut and polished by hand, often in another country, then shipped and taxed. Common stones like clear quartz and rose quartz stay affordable; rare ones like moldavite or natural citrine cost far more.
Are crystals actually expensive?
Most healing crystals are not. A tumbled stone or a simple bead bracelet fits most budgets. The price climbs only with rarity, size and quality, the same way it does for any natural gemstone.
7 reasons some crystals cost more
- Rarity. Stones found in only one place on Earth, such as moldavite from the Czech Republic or larimar from the Dominican Republic, are limited, so they cost more.
- Size. A large, unbroken piece is far rarer than small chips of the same stone, so the price rises faster than the size.
- Clarity. Fewer cracks and cloudy patches mean a higher grade. A water-clear quartz point costs more than a milky one.
- Colour. Deep, even colour is graded higher. Deep purple amethyst costs more than pale lavender.
- Natural vs treated. Untreated stones cost more. Much of the "citrine" sold in markets is heated amethyst; natural citrine is pale and rarer.
- Cutting and finishing. Spheres, towers, pyramids and carved idols take hours of skilled hand work and waste a lot of raw stone.
- Mining, import and tax. Many crystals come from Brazil, Madagascar and Africa. Freight, import duty and GST add to the shelf price in India.
Deep, even colour is why good amethyst is graded higher. Shop amethyst
How much do crystals cost in India?
Approximate Indian retail ranges in 2026:
| Item | Typical price | What raises it |
|---|---|---|
| Tumbled stone (clear quartz, rose quartz) | ₹100 – ₹500 | Size, polish |
| 8 mm bead bracelet | ₹800 – ₹3,500 | Stone, bead grade, lab certificate |
| Crystal tree or pyramid | ₹1,500 – ₹8,000 | Size, real stone vs glass chips |
| Amethyst or quartz cluster | ₹1,500 – ₹25,000+ | Colour, point size, weight |
| Sphere or tower | ₹1,000 – ₹20,000+ | Clarity, size |
| Rare stones (moldavite, natural citrine) | ₹5,000+ even for small pieces | Rarity, origin |
Are crystals more expensive than gold?
No. Gram for gram, everyday healing crystals cost far less than gold. Only rare gemstones such as emerald, ruby and blue sapphire can approach or exceed gold prices.
Why are some crystals so cheap?
Very cheap "crystals" are often glass, resin, dyed howlite or reconstituted stone dust. Low-grade natural stone is also cheap and is fine for beginners. If a rare stone is priced like a common one, ask questions before you buy.
Is "crystal" glassware the same thing?
No. Crystal glass, such as lead-crystal vases and branded figurines, is man-made glass. Its price comes from the brand and the cutting work, not from a natural stone.
How to tell if a crystal is real and fairly priced
- Real stones usually show small natural marks or inclusions; glass looks perfectly uniform and may have tiny round bubbles.
- Real crystal feels cool in the hand and warms slowly.
- Ask the seller where it comes from and whether it is treated or dyed.
- For bracelets, ask for a lab-certificate option.
- Buy from a seller who will answer your questions after the sale.
